About
Kadake Bay Cabin is a remote USFS rental cabin situated at the mouth of Kadake Creek on northeastern Kuiu Island in southeast Alaska's Tongass National Forest. The modified hunter-style cabin sleeps up to six guests with one double bunk, one single bunk, and a loft. Inside you'll find a wood stove, wooden table, benches, and basic tools like an axe and maul. An outhouse with a removable basket system is provided outside. The surrounding terrain features grassy tidal flats and low-elevation old-growth forest, home to black bears, waterfowl, and grouse. Kadake Creek offers fishing for coho and pink salmon, steelhead, Dolly Varden, and cutthroat trout. Hunting for bears and waterfowl is popular in the area. Guests must bring all essentials including sleeping bags, cooking gear, potable water, and kerosene or #1 diesel fuel for the stove. Firewood may be available but is not guaranteed. High levels of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning have been recorded in local clams. Access requires careful tide planning as 18-foot or higher tides are needed for direct boat or float plane access to the cabin.
Directions
Access is by float plane from Petersburg (39 miles) or boat from Kake (13 miles). Float planes generally land near the mouth of the bay and require up to a 2-mile hike across the tide flat at lower tides. An 18-foot or higher tide is required for direct boat or float plane access to the cabin.
