About
Coghill Lake Cabin sits on a lagoon on the southwest shore of Coghill Lake, offering views of the Chugach Mountains and glaciers in the background. The cabin is surrounded by rolling hills and conifer trees within the Nellie Juan-College Fiord Wilderness Study Area. This remote location is renowned for exceptional salmon fishing, with sockeye running mid-June through July, pink and chum in July-August, and Coho in August-September. Dolly Varden trout fishing is productive May through October. The primitive A-frame cabin includes wooden bunks with a sleeping loft for up to 6 guests, a kerosene heating stove, table, benches, and an outhouse. A rowboat with oars is provided for lake access. Guests must bring all supplies including drinking water or purification, kerosene (1-2 gallons daily for heating), cook stove, bedding, sleeping pads, toilet paper, flashlights, cookware, and personal flotation devices. Access is by floatplane (50 minutes from Anchorage or 60 minutes from Cordova) landing in the lagoon near the cabin boardwalk. Alternatively, experienced backcountry travelers can hike the primitive 3-mile trail from Port Wells, though the route is brushy, rough, and poorly marked. Some visitors packraft in and float out the Class 1-2 Coghill River. Black bears are common in the area; practice bear safety.
Directions
