Anacapa Island

Anacapa Island Campground sits on the volcanic bluffs of East Anacapa, the closest of the Channel Islands to mainland California. The seven primitive tent sites offer sweeping views of towering sea cliffs, natural rock arches including the iconic 40-foot Arch Rock, and the vast Pacific. All camping gear, food, and water must be carried from the boat landing via a half-mile trail that includes 157 stairs up the rugged cliffs. The island's rich marine environment supports world-class kayaking, snorkeling, and diving opportunities in pristine kelp forests. Hikers can explore two miles of trails leading to dramatic overlooks at Cathedral Cove and Pinniped Point, where California sea lions and harbor seals rest on the rocky shores below. The 1932 lighthouse complex features mission revival architecture and a visitor center. From April through mid-August, Western gulls nest throughout the island, and campers will encounter rookery conditions including guano, strong odors, constant noise, and territorial birds. The island supports the largest breeding colony of western gulls in the world and provides critical habitat for endangered California brown pelicans on West Anacapa.

Boat transportation only. Arrange passage through Island Packers from Ventura Harbor or Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard. From Highway 101, exit Victoria or Seaward to reach Ventura Harbor. The campground is a half-mile hike including 157 stairs from the Landing Cove.
