About
Upper O'Brien Campground is a peaceful riverside retreat located along the Salmon River in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. The campground features 9 campsites including 1 double-site situated under lodgepole pines, all available on a first-come, first-served basis. The Salmon River offers excellent fishing opportunities for steelhead and trout, while the nearby Sunbeam Hot Springs provides a unique soaking experience where visitors can adjust the 169-degree water temperature by moving rocks to allow cooler river water to flow in. The area is rich with recreational opportunities including a boat ramp at Yankee Fork for floating the river's 14 miles of Class III and IV rapids. History enthusiasts can explore the Land of the Yankee Fork mining area north of the historic Sunbeam Dam site on Forest Road #013. The Sunbeam Dam, built to power mining operations, was the only dam ever constructed on the Salmon River before being partially destroyed with dynamite in 1934. The campground provides vault toilets, potable water, picnic tables, and fire pits, with horses and pack animals permitted.
