Long Cane Recreation Area
Open
— The recreation area is currently open year-round. Group shelters are available on a first-come, first-served basis without advance reservations.
About
Long Cane Recreation Area sits on West Point Lake, conveniently positioned between the towns of West Point and LaGrange in west Georgia. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this waterfront facility provides access to the 525-mile shoreline of West Point Lake.
The park offers two group shelters available for reservation: one with electric hookups and one without. These shelters are suitable for gatherings, picnics, and events, with parking available on a first-come, first-served basis. The facility also features hiking trails, a boat ramp for lake access, and scattered picnic sites. It functions primarily as a day-use area rather than an overnight camping destination.
Recreational opportunities at Long Cane include hiking, fishing, boating, and picnicking. The location is unstaffed, with management handled through the West Point Project Management office. Visitors should note that pets must be leashed and are not allowed on beaches, and off-road vehicles including golf carts, ATVs, and UTVs are prohibited.
Directions
Take Georgia Highway 29 approximately six miles north of West Point. Watch for the signs to enter Long Cane on the left. Turn right after entering park; follow the road to enter into the shelter parking area on the right.
